Users of Camelford Leisure Centre are celebrating the start of its second year as a community run centre.
In January last year the leisure centre re-opened its doors with new management and a board of directors made up of members of the community. The team, who took on the challenge of saving the valuable facility that had been running at a financial loss, report that the centre is in much better shape than previous years. They acknowledge that there is still a lot of hard work to do to but plans are being put in place this year to ensure long term sustainability.
Many new members have signed up in January as they set their goals for getting fit and healthy in the New Year.
Wayne Jordan-Shilling, Managing Director, is not surprised that so many people turn to the leisure centre at this time of year, saying “January is a great time to start to get fit. People set their New Year resolutions and they seem to have renewed energy. After all that sitting around at Christmas and with Spring just round the corner, there’s no better time to shake off the bad habits and start working on leading a healthier lifestyle. The leisure centre can really help people achieve their goals.”
One man who has taken the plunge is Sam Capstick (pictured, receiving his new membership card.) Mr Capstick says: “I recently suffered a torn cruciate ligament playing football and took advantage of Camelford Leisure Centre’s brilliant special offer to help aid my recovery. The centre has a real community feel and the staff are passionate about making everyone’s visit as comfortable and as beneficial as possible, whether you’re after increased physical ability or just good old fashioned fun!”
Sam went on to say that he appreciates the importance of the community’s involvement in keeping the leisure centre viable: “I can’t help but think with more participation from members of the public the centre will grow into something even more special and even now it’s certainly improved my lifestyle, I couldn’t live without it at the moment. With that I strongly urge members of the community to give it a go and now is as good a time as any with the new year offers.”
Camelford Leisure Centre will be marking its first anniversary with an open day and a number of special offers, including 12 months for the price of 10 for new members who sign up before the end of February, and the management team are happy to provide answers to enquiries from anyone interested to join in.
